Corning is one of the world’s leading innovators in glass, ceramic, and materials science. From the depths of the ocean to the farthest reaches of space, our technologies push the boundaries of what’s possible. We are looking for a Manager, Micro-Optics Technology, to help shape the future of optical interconnect technology.
Location: Berlin-Adlershof, Germany
Role Purpose
We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Technology Manager for Micro-Optics to lead the development, integration, and optimization of micro-optics solutions for Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) connectivity. This role requires a deep understanding of optics, photonics, and semiconductor packaging, and a focus on advancing technologies to enable high-performance optical interconnects in next‑generation data centres and high‑speed computing systems. The ideal candidate will combine technical expertise with leadership capabilities to drive collaboration across multidisciplinary teams and ensure successful delivery of cutting‑edge solutions.
Key Responsibilities
* Define and execute technology roadmaps for optical and micro‑optics systems, aligning with customer and market needs.
* Lead multidisciplinary teams in R&D, design, prototyping, integration, and validation of optical components (lenses, waveguides, couplers, connectors, FAUs).
* Oversee system integration, performance optimisation, and lifecycle management.
* Collaborate with internal teams, external partners, suppliers, and foundries to ensure seamless integration and manufacturability.
* Serve as subject matter expert, providing technical guidance, mentoring, and career development for team members.
* Develop and implement rigorous testing, characterization, and quality assurance processes.
* Represent the organisation at industry events, contribute to technical publications, patents, and standards development.
* Manage project planning, timelines, budgets, and resource allocation.
Required Education
* Master’s or Ph.D. in Optics, Photonics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
Required Skills
* Minimum 8‑10 years of experience in optical systems design, micro‑optics development, or photonic integration.
* Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
* Proven track record of managing technology development projects in optics or photonics.
* Expertise in micro‑optics design, fabrication techniques (e.g., wafer‑level optics, lithography, molding), and optical simulation tools (e.g., Zemax, Lumerical).
* Strong knowledge of photonic integration technologies, including silicon photonics, VCSELs, and fibre‑optic communication systems.
* Familiarity with semiconductor packaging, thermal management, and manufacturing processes.
Preferred Qualifications
* Familiarity with Co‑Packaged Optics architecture and its applications in data centres and high‑performance computing.
* Experience working with suppliers, foundries, and testing laboratories for optical components.
* Knowledge of industry standards for optical interconnects, such as IEEE 802.3 standards for Ethernet connectivity.
* German language proficiency.
Benefits
* Company‑wide bonuses and long‑term incentives aligned with key business results.
* 100% company‑paid pension benefit that grows throughout your career.
* Health and well‑being benefits including company‑paid life insurance, disability insurance, paid time off, and an Employee Assistance Programme.
* Recognition program to celebrate successes and reward colleagues who make exceptional contributions.
