Key responsibilities of the role
* Lead, drive and manage the overall operations of the projects, ensuring that the Programme, Commercial, Safety, Quality, and Environmental objectives are established and company KPI’s are tracked and managed.
* Manage several projects on sites around Europe across multiple jurisdictions, and regularly attend sites.
* Manage client expectations and maintain client relationships – regular check-ins, address issues, business development, etc.
* Manage the tender process from an operations function and work with the management team and pre-con on new tenders for the BU.
* Understand strategy and pipeline for future projects.
* Act as a liaison to senior management and board of directors to keep them up to date on all aspects of the projects and attend BU meetings as required.
* Deal promptly and professionally with any potential internal or external disputes.
* Manage the expectations of all stakeholders (clients, end customers, contractors, consultants, etc.).
* Ensure communication between head office departments and the site to establish and maintain a trusting, inclusive, and productive environment and a culture of continuous improvement that supports project teams.
* Ensure DCBS central support structures are available to assist the project team.
* Promote a culture of incident & injury freedom and continuous improvement in QEHS performance on the project.
* Review with the QA/QC manager and Project Manager the effectiveness of management systems to achieve safety, quality and environmental objectives.
* Fully understand Mercury’s contract position and the employer’s requirements and ensure the project team is aware of them.
* Manage budgets and costs effectively in the planning process and provide input for cost reports; report on major parts of the project as requested.
* Assess financial and commercial contracting matters on the project in conjunction with the Project Q.S. and Project Manager.
* Plan, monitor and report on project prelims.
* Monitor and advise on the administration of the Client/Mercury Contract and Mercury Sub-contractor contracts.
* Ensure change management is handled correctly (Cost & Programme).
* Support the administration of Client/Mercury Contract and Mercury Sub-contractor contracts (in conjunction with legal, commercial, management and project teams).
* Record lessons learned and ensure they are actioned and shared within the business.
* Conduct internal contract review meetings with Mercury legal team and ensure key staff attend.
* Plan, monitor and analyse key metrics for day-to-day performance and ensure reporting to Mercury Engineering Senior Management reflects project status.
* Hold weekly project meetings and minuting (client meetings, project meetings and weekly subcontractors meetings).
* Maintain clear communication with all staff and contractors through meetings, whiteboards and DABs, ensuring lookahead and expectations are clearly communicated.
* Maintain project risk and opportunity registers and update regularly in line with company processes.
* Identify skills gaps in the Business Unit and assist with recruitment programs.
* Initiate and support staff and manager training to ensure roles are performed effectively.
* Provide leadership support to teams and motivate staff to achieve project goals.
* Work with Project Managers to ensure staff are working efficiently and effectively.
* Facilitate the formation of a project team suited to project delivery.
* Influence Mercury’s multidisciplinary and integrated approach within the BU.
* Focus on staff retention and progression; ensure personal reviews are conducted and goals set.
* Address issues, conflicts, or underperformance promptly; assist HR Business Partner as needed.
* Plan and utilise all resources required to meet specifications within budget and schedule.
* Attend site, quality and engineering reviews and handover meetings.
* Ensure design and procurement are completed in accordance with programme requirements and specifications.
* Promote value engineering and off-site manufacturing to achieve quality, safety, commercial and programme targets.
* Review packages and scope of works prior to subcontract agreements.
* Ensure key performance indicators are in place and reported accurately.
* Implement management systems at all stages of the construction process, including sub-contractor management.
* Ensure Project Execution Plans are in place, accurate and updated as required.
* Promote Mercury values and ensure compliance with Mercury processes and procedures across project teams.
* Provide leadership, management and development while ensuring financial and operational commitments are met and exceeded.
Essential criteria for the role
* 3rd level qualification, Engineering Degree or recognised trade qualification
* 10+ years’ experience of managing large construction projects as a General Contractor
* Proven track record running multiple projects
* Contracts management experience on large-scale projects would be an advantage
* Strong working knowledge of industry regulations and legislative guidelines
* Negotiation skills in internal and external settings
* Flexibility in working patterns where necessary
* Ability to efficiently manage teams by setting expectations, delegation, and responsibilities
* Strong communication & computer skills
* Ability to work on own initiative with strong interpersonal and communication skills
* German speaking would be an advantage
