Duties Description The Park Worker 3 plays a key role by assisting in maintaining the safety, cleanliness, and overall appearance of Jones Beach. This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment in both routine and emergency maintenance activities, ensuring a clean, safe, and attractive environment for millions of park visitors each year.
Heavy Equipment Operations:
• Operate and maintain heavy equipment such as loaders, bulldozers, backhoes, excavators, graders, dump trucks, forklifts, Broyhill and Surf-rake machines, and front-loading refuse (garbage packers) trucks, snow removal, and beach / park maintenance.
• Safely operate garbage packer trucks to empty dumpsters across all assigned parks (Jones Beach, Robert Moses, and Captree State Parks).
• Perform snow and ice control, including plowing public access roads and parking fields. Loading and spreading salt/sand and maintaining equipment during winter storms.
• Remove sand buildup from seawalls, boardwalks, parking fields, and grades beachfront after winter, restoring beaches to optimal condition.
Park & Public Safety Maintenance:
• Ensure safe and sanitary beachfront conditions by removing refuse and debris.
• Erect and maintain erosion control fencing for public safety and shoreline stabilization.
• Assist in seasonal preparation for lifeguard operations, including installing mainstands, burying phone/electrical communication wiring.
Staffing Supervision & Training:
• Assist in supervising and training seasonal and/or permanent employees on snow plowing and other maintenance tasks.
• Evaluate seasonal staff performance as directed.
Equipment Care & Preventive Maintenance
• Perform daily equipment inspections, cleaning and minor repairs using hand tools, grease guns, and other tools.
• Carry out preventive maintenance procedures and report major equipment needs or replacement recommendations.
• Maintain equipment in proper operating condition and always ensure safe use.
Administrative & Coordination:
• Support recycling initiatives, including collection and transport of cardboard and other materials to recycling facilities.
• Coordinate work with maintenance, operations, and lifeguard staff to ensure smooth park operations.
• Participate in required health, safety, and agency-mandated training programs.
Minimum Qualifications One year of experience* in the operation and / or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility.
In addition to operations and maintenance, the following types of experience are also qualifying: law enforcement or security, firefighting, environmental education, environmental stewardship, natural resource management, forest management, wildlife management or preservation, or historic preservation or interpretation; OR
One year of military service in any of the military branches; OR
An Associate’s or higher-level degree, or 60 credit hours of college level coursework; OR
Completion of an appropriate two-year technical / trades school program or two years' experience as a trades assistant under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson.
