Physicist - Product Development (Optical Detection/Simulation) Our client, a well-established international manufacturer of scientific and laboratory technologies, is looking to add an experienced R&D Physicist to their development organisation. The role focuses on advancing optical detection solutions used in high-performance analytical instruments. You will join a multidisciplinary engineering team working at the interface of optics, microfluidics, and system design. Role Overview In this position, you will contribute to the design, modelling, and optimisation of optical and optomechanical assemblies, with a strong focus on UV-Vis or IR detection. You will evaluate concepts through advanced simulation tools, develop prototype setups, and collaborate closely with engineers and application specialists to shape next-generation detection solutions. Your Responsibilities Develop and refine designs for optical, optomechanical, and microfluidic assemblies used in advanced detection modules. Carry out simulations using ray-tracing, CFD, and multiphysics tools to compare design options and guide decision-making. Build, test, and troubleshoot prototypes to quickly assess functional performance. Interpret large datasets from experiments and simulations to support engineering conclusions. Prepare technical documentation and specifications based on cross-functional input. Collaborate with internal teams, external partners, and suppliers to drive technical progress. Essential Requirements Degree (MSc or PhD) in Physics or a closely aligned subject. Strong grounding in linear optics, preferably UV-Vis, with IR experience also relevant. Proven hands-on experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics. Practical knowledge of simulation and modelling tools such as: COMSOL, Ansys Fluent, OpenFOAM, SimScale, Star-CCM, MATLAB/Simulink, SolidWorks, and optical tools like ZEMAX or Ansys Lumerical. Competence in programming or scripting for data analysis or automation (e.g., Python, MATLAB, C# ). Fluent in German and English. What's in it for you? A cooperative and skilled R&D environment where knowledge sharing is encouraged. Structured onboarding plus ongoing mentoring and development opportunities. Flexible working practices and a healthy work-life balance. Competitive salary package with variable performance-related components.
