The Biophysics Department is an interdisciplinary team of biologists, physicists, chemists, engineers, and technicians (all genders) performing research on biological effects of energetic heavy ions. Our research spans a broad spectrum, including radiobiology, radiation physics, space research, and radiation therapy.

Group Leader “Immune System and Tissue Radiobiology” (all genders)

The research group “Immune System and Tissue Radiobiology” focuses on the immunomodulatory effects of radiation therapy, with particular emphasis on heavy ion therapy. Current research activities include the combination of particle therapy with immunotherapy approaches, such as checkpoint inhibitors and mRNA-based treatments. The group employs a wide range of biological models, from in vitro cell systems to organoids and in vivo models.

Your responsibilities:
* Develop and implement a forward-looking research strategy, aiming to establish a leading international program at the interface of particle therapy and immunotherapy
* Acquire third-party funding at national and international levels
* Supervise postdoctoral researchers and PhD students (all genders)
* Report research activities to the Department Director
* Establish strong collaborations with the other groups within the Biophysics Department (see www.gsi.de/en/work/research/biophysics/biophysical_research for a full list)
* Strengthen collaborations with universities and research institutions, particularly with Technische Universität Darmstadt, eventually leading to a professorship
* Publish research findings in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and present results at international conferences.
Your profile:
* PhD in biology or a related discipline
* At least five years of postdoctoral experience in radiobiology, immunology, or a closely related field
* International research experience across multiple laboratories
* Experience conducting experiments at particle accelerators or other radiation facilities
* Strong publication record in relevant fields
* Proven experience supervising Master’s and PhD students (all genders)
* Fluency in English; knowledge of German is an advantage.

The contract is unlimited. The salary is based on the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD).
