Head of Risk Governance (Confidential – My Client, Leading International In-House Company)
Location : Southern Germany, Stuttgart or Munich.
My client, a fast-growing and innovative international in-house company, is seeking an inaugural Head of Risk Governance. This is a rare “green field” opportunity to build and shape the enterprise risk management (ERM) function from the ground up. The position reports directly to the board, ensuring independent oversight and a strong voice in strategic decision-making at the highest level.
Key Responsibilities
* Design and implement a comprehensive risk governance framework
* Establish and maintain the corporate risk register ; ensure timely escalation and transparent reporting of significant risks to the board and relevant committees.
* Advise the board and executive team on emerging risks, regulatory developments, and risk appetite, providing clear, actionable insights to support strategic objectives.
* Lead risk identification and assessment workshops across all business units, embedding a proactive risk culture company-wide.
* Develop and deliver regular risk reports and presentations directly to the board, highlighting key exposures, trends, and mitigation strategies.
* Promote “risk ownership” at every level, driving awareness and training initiatives to ensure risk management is embedded in day-to-day decision-making.
* Recruit, lead, and mentor a small team of risk professionals as the function grows.
* Collaborate with internal audit, compliance, information security, and business units to ensure integrated and effective risk management.
* Support business continuity planning and crisis management processes.
Candidate Profile
1. Significant experience (7+ years) in risk management, governance, or financial controlling within an international in-house company or similar environment.
2. Demonstrated success building and leading risk management frameworks, particularly in green field or rapidly scaling settings.
3. Experience reporting directly to boards or board-level committees, with the independence and gravitas to challenge and advise senior stakeholders.
4. Strong understanding of risk frameworks, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
5. Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and leadership skills.
6. Advanced degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or a related field; MBA or relevant professional certifications (e.g., CINA, Controller Diplom) are a plus.
7. Fluent in German and English.
