The research unit Differential and Personality Psychology, Psychological Assessment and Behavioural Genetics investigates the patterns and sources of personality development across the lifespan. In this context, personality is understood as a broad construct that integrates dispositions to typical behavioral patterns (e. g., emotion regulation and behavioral style), motivational and self-regulatory dispositions of behavioral differences (e. g., motives, interests, value orientations, and self-concept), cognitive abilities (e. g., intelligence and creativity), and physical characteristics (e. g., BMI and attractiveness) as important factors in interpersonal interactions. The explanation of individual differences focuses on genetic, biological, and experiential (individual, social, and cultural) factors, as well as their interaction and interplay. The collection of complex data, the development, evaluation, and application of corresponding measurement and testing procedures are essential components in this regard, as are the use of complex study designs and data analysis methods.
