Join METRO Markets as Team Lead – Invoice Controlling

METRO Markets is strengthening its Accounting function and is looking for a Team Lead – Invoice Controlling to join us in Düsseldorf or Palma de Mallorca.
In this role, you’ll lead and develop a high-performing Invoice Controlling team, ensuring accurate processing of goods-related invoices across multiple countries. You’ll be a key driver of operational excellence, compliance, and automation — partnering closely with Commercial, Supply Chain, Tech, and ERP teams to support our international growth.
What you’ll do
1. Lead, coordinate, and develop the Invoice Controlling team, ensuring high performance, accuracy, and compliance with agreed SLAs and KPIs.
2. Own and present team and company KPIs and OKRs, translating performance insights into concrete improvement initiatives.
3. Monitor productivity and quality, identify gaps, and implement corrective actions to continuously raise standards.
4. Act as the main point of contact for internal and external audits (financial and tax) related to goods Accounts Payable.
5. Manage relationships with international vendors, ensuring timely and accurate processing of goods invoices and supporting the Vendor Management team.
6. Oversee and continuously improve the end-to-end 3-way matching process.
7. Own open payables lists and lead the resolution of price and quantity discrepancies with vendors.
8. Manage and escalate invoice-related queries; prepare reports, analyses, and management summaries as required.
9. Prepare and review monthly reporting on aged payables, intercompany balances, and vendor reconciliations.
10. Lead a mixed hybrid and non-hybrid team, including task allocation, performance feedback, coaching, and development.
11. Act as a key interface with internal stakeholders (Commercial, Supply Chain, Warehouse Managers) to clarify issues and drive timely resolution.
12. Collaborate with vendors on invoice accuracy, including the management of credit and debit notes.
13. Support METRO Markets’ internationalization strategy by building scalable Accounts Payable processes, including new country setups and master data governance.
14. Partner with Tech and ERP teams to drive automation initiatives (OCR, EDI) and continuous system improvements.
15. Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate bookkeeping and strong integration between Accounts Payable and General Ledger.
16. Support the preparation and review of financial statements in line with IFRS and German GAAP, ensuring completeness of AP-related balances.
17. Analyze financial and operational data to support decision-making, audit readiness, and continuous improvement.
18. Contribute to month-end closing activities and help shape the future accounting landscape as part of the Accounting leadership team.
You've got
19. A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
20. At least 3 years of professional experience in Accounting or Accounts Payable, ideally with exposure to General Ledger and financial statement preparation.
21. Prior experience in an Accountant role or similar accounting responsibility is strongly preferred.
22. First experience leading, mentoring, or coordinating a team (formal or informal leadership) is a strong plus.
23. Solid experience handling invoices with varying VAT rates.
24. A high level of ownership and accountability — you work independently while taking responsibility for team outcomes.
25. Excellent organizational skills, a proactive and hands-on leadership style, and a solution-oriented mindset.
26. A strong passion for process optimization and automation, with experience improving manual or inefficient workflows.
27. Clear and confident communication skills, with the ability to explain financial topics to non-finance stakeholders.
28. Fluency in English is required; German and Spanish are a strong advantage.
