The Max Planck Computing and Data Facility (MPCDF) is a center of excellence for scientific computing and data management within the Max Planck Society (MPG). At its location on the Garching Research Campus near Munich, the MPCDF operates high-performance computers, clusters, a complex cloud infrastructure, and storage and archiving solutions for the MPG. Currently, this infrastructure consists of approximately 6,000 computer systems, connected to a variety of storage systems with a total data capacity of 600 petabytes. The MPCDF is also involved in the development and optimization of applications and algorithms for high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, as well as the design and implementation of data solutions. To strengthen its technical IT team, the MPCDF is seeking an IT Expert (m/f/d) Reference Number 02/2026 Your responsibilities will include the further development and operation of MPCDF’s cloud, HPC, and storage ecosystems. Together with your colleagues, you will ensure the stable operation of these systems, analyze performance, security, and stability aspects of daily operations, and use these insights—enriched by personal feedback from our users at the MPG—to make a significant contribution to the design and procurement of new expansion stages for our HPC, cloud, and storage solutions. Requirements for applicants: You have successfully completed a degree in computer science, natural sciences, or engineering, or possess comparable qualifications You have excellent communication and teamwork skills You work independently and take initiative You have excellent written and spoken English skills You have several years of experience in the administration of Linux operating systems as well as in programming with Shell and Python In-depth knowledge in at least two of the following areas is desirable: Software-defined storage (Ceph, S3) Distributed and parallel file systems (CephFS, NFS, Samba, GPFS, Lustre, BeeGFS) Infrastructure-as-a-Service platforms (OpenStack, OpenShift) Archiving systems (HPSS, Versity, Blackpearl) Backup environments (TSM, Bacula, Veeam) HPC systems with low-latency networks Configuration management (Ansible, Puppet, Git, CI/CD) Linux HA systems (Pacemaker, Stonith) Distributed web applications (HAProxy, Nginx, PHP, Redis, MariaDB) Cloud-native and container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, OpenStack Heat Orchestration) Network design: L2, L3, routing, IPv4, IPv6 Software-defined networking (Open vSwitch, Open Virtual Network) What We Offer This full-time position is available immediately.
