The research group of Alba Diz-Muñoz at the Cell Biology and Biophysics Unit of EMBL Heidelberg is seeking a Scientific Officer for assistance with general laboratory tasks and advanced cell biology and biophysical measurements. EMBL is Europe’s life sciences laboratory – an intergovernmental organisation with more than 110 independent research groups and service teams covering the spectrum of molecular biology. It operates across six sites in Heidelberg (headquarters), Barcelona, Cambridge, Grenoble, Hamburg and Rome. Our mission is to perform basic research in molecular and cell biology; train scientists, students and visitors at all levels; offer vital services to scientists in the public and private sectors within the member states; develop new instruments and methods; and engage actively in technology transfer. Your role In particular, the scientific officer will perform biophysical experiments to explore the role of cell surface mechanics in mitosis. Our international and enthusiastic team performs high quality research in the areas of cell biology, biophysics, and medicine with a particular interest in the role of mechanics at the interface between the cell and its surroundings. Among the main responsibilities are: Management of general lab resources Assist lab members with cell culture work, including generation of stable cell lines Perform routine genetic engineering (e.g. restriction cloning, gibson assembly) Perform or assist lab members with biophysical techniques including atomic force microscopy measurements of cellular mechanical properties. Assist with data presentation and vizualisation Your profile A PhD in life sciences or biophysics. Experience with standard molecular biology and cell biology techniques, including working with cell lines. Excellent skills in organisation, documentation and reporting, as well as the ability to work pro-actively across a broad range of functions in a dynamic, international and interdisciplinary environment. Good interpersonal skills and solid written and spoken English. German language skills are not essential. Experience with micropatterning of cell substrates An understanding of biophysical measurement techniques, and in particular prior experience with atomic force microscopy.
