Full Professorship (W3) for Novel Synthesis Concepts in Organic Chemistry

About TU Darmstadt

TU Darmstadt stands for excellent and relevant science. We are playing a decisive role in shaping far-reaching processes of global change—from energy transition to artificial intelligence—through outstanding scientific knowledge and innovative academic programmes. We group our cutting-edge research into three fields: Energy and Environment, Information and Intelligence, Matter and Materials .

TU Darmstadt has strong ties to the Frankfurt-Rhine-Main metropolitan region and is well known for its cosmopolitanism and international outlook. As one of the three Rhine-Main Universities (RMU), TU Darmstadt cooperates closely with Goethe University Frankfurt and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. This includes academic research, study and teaching, the promotion of early-career researchers, and the transfer of knowledge and technology to the economy and society. TU Darmstadt actively promotes diversity and equality. We consider diversity to be the key to creative solutions and social progress.

About our department

The Department of Chemistry at TU Darmstad t offers scientific solutions to many of today's challenges and focuses on both basic and applied research. Research in the Department of Chemistry focuses on three main research areas :

We offer unique opportunities for interdisciplinary research as our expertise includes inorganic, organic, physical, theoretical, technical, macromolecular chemistry and biochemistry. These form the basis for our strong collaborative research. The chemical and biochemical industry in the Rhine-Main region also offers various points of contact and excellent opportunities for co-operation.

Your tasks

The Department of Chemistry at the Technical University of Darmstadt seeks candidates at the earliest possible date for a Full Professorship (W3) for Novel Synthesis Concepts in Organic Chemistry

The research of the professorship advertised here should form an interface between organic chemistry and the research area Polymer Science and Engineering and be complementary to the existing expertise in the Department of Chemistry. A link to the research fields of the TU Darmstadt and the Rhine-Main University network is advantageous.

The focus of the synthetic organic chemistry research should preferably be on the development of innovative synthesis concepts that for example utilise the influenceability of chemical equilibria to steer the selectivity of reactions.

Possible research areas include:

* Novel concepts for the targeted formation and breaking of chemical bonds
* Switchability of catalysts via external stimuli to control regio- or stereoselectivity
* Exploitation of non-equilibrium processes
* Synthesis exploiting the conformational preferences of the reagents involved

The desired link to the research area Polymer Science and Engineering could be achieved, for example, through synthesis concepts related to sustainability aspects in the synthesis and degradation of polymers or polymer composites. Similarly, synthesis concepts in the context of non-equilibrium processes could be applied in controlled polymer degradation or in the context of porous materials and rapidly switchable separation concepts.

The teaching responsibilities of the professorship include the committed and independent organisation and implementation of courses in the field of organic chemistry for the German-Language bachelor programmes in Chemistry and Biomolecular Engineering as well as for the corresponding master’s degree programmes. In addition, participation in teacher training and minor subject training is also planned. Furthermore, participation in the RMU degree programme ‘Soft Matter and Materials’ is possible.

Your profile

We are looking for an internationally recognised researcher whose aptitude for independent research has been proven by a doctorate and additionally either by a habilitation or by habilitation-equivalent achievements. In particular, pertinent publications in international journals, teaching experience in organic chemistry, successful acquisition of third-party funding, experience in leading a research group and willingness to engage in academic self-administration are relevant.

We explicitly encourage applications from scientists who do not yet hold a permanent professorship!

The prerequisites for employment are in accordance with the Sections 67 and 68 of the Hessisches Hochschulgesetz (Hessian Higher Education Act).

As part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main metropolitan region, Technical University of Darmstadt and its surroundings are characterized by living internationality. The core element of this is a cosmopolitan climate with functional multilingualism at our university. Therefore, very good English and, at the latest after three years, good German language skills are expected.

This job advertisement is open to people of all genders. TU Darmstadt aims to further increase the number of female professors, and we therefore strongly encourage interested female researchers to apply!
