Position: Senior UX Designer (all genders) - Wikidata
Location: Berlin | Contract: Permanent | Hours: 35-40 hours/week | Start: As soon as possible
Wikidata is a free, collaboratively created knowledge graph founded in 2012 by Wikimedia Deutschland. It serves as central storage for structured data of Wikimedia projects like Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Wiktionary, Wikisource, etc. Its dataset is also used externally by virtual assistants such as Siri and Alexa.
As the UX Designer for Wikidata, you will collaborate within a cross-functional team to identify key problems and deliver inclusive, accessible solutions that reach millions of users. The role reports to the Head of UX and is part of an eight-member UX team dedicated to understanding user needs and designing digital experiences that promote knowledge equity and empower contributions from diverse backgrounds.
Responsibilities:
1. Design and evaluate the user experience of Wikidata and its features in line with product strategy.
2. Create personas, user flows, and mockups (low and high fidelity) to demonstrate ideas.
3. Support all stages of the product lifecycle, from strategy to delivery and evaluation.
4. Validate designs through reviews and usability testing.
5. Collaborate closely with product managers, community managers, and engineers throughout the process.
6. Engage the community using participatory methods during product development.
7. Translate complex concepts into understandable designs and prototypes.
8. Create high-fidelity UI designs following Wikimedia standards and prepare handover documents for developers.
9. Define use cases, workflows, interactions, and interfaces that are intuitive and industry best practice-compliant.
10. Handle complex design challenges, define experiments, and support user research and testing (using tools like Figma).
11. Maintain a design portfolio to showcase your work.
Qualifications:
* Degree or equivalent in a design-related field or similar competencies with solid UX experience.
* Proficiency in recognizing and applying design patterns, establishing design principles, and working iteratively in an agile environment.
* Experience with design systems and establishing internal design standards collaboratively.
* Excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills in English.
* Experience designing complex tools and advocating for accessibility is a plus.
* Familiarity with participatory or co-design methods is beneficial.
* Strong portfolio demonstrating your UX design capabilities.
