Research Associate for the Project “High-Order statistics of wiNDs in the lower and middle Atmosphere (HONDA)” § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG
InstitutionFaculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences, Department of Earth System Sciences, Meteorology
Salary level
Start date01.04.2026, fixed for a period of three years (This is a fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act [Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG]).

Weekly hours75 % of standard work hours per week
Your responsibilities
Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue further academic qualifications outside of their work responsibilities.
Tasks include global circulation model (GCM) simulations of the Earth's atmosphere, idealized direct numerical simulations (DNS) of stratified turbulence, and analysis of observational data from remote sensing or in situ sources. The focus is on analyzing energy, helicity, and enstrophy cascades using these different data sets in order to understand the bidirectional (direct and inverse) cascade processes in the Earth's atmosphere.
This joint project is being carried out in close cooperation with the Radar Sounding Department at the Leibniz Institute for Atmospheric Physics (IAP) in Kühlungsborn.
The successful candidate will also be permanently involved in publishing and presenting research and project results.
Your profile
A university degree in a relevant field.
A strong background in fluid mechanics and/or atmospheric physics is essential, as is a solid understanding of isotropic turbulence theory. Experience of direct numerical simulations (DNS) and global circulation model (GCM) simulations would be advantageous. Knowledge of applying statistical methods and machine learning techniques using Python would also be an asset. Previous experience in scientific data processing and visualisation would also be advantageous. Proficiency in the Python programming language is essential.
