Role Summary

Is the next step in your career at SMBC Group EMEA? We’re looking for a IFRS9 Credit Risk Management Director (m/f/d) for our Risk Management Department to join our team.

This role will be responsible for overseeing the end-to-end IFRS9 framework, including model development, governance, and implementation across the institution. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the robustness of credit risk measurement and provisioning processes, while aligning with regulatory expectations and internal risk appetite.

This position offers a unique opportunity to lead IFRS9 initiatives within a dynamic risk management environment and contribute to the broader credit risk and capital strategy of the institution.


Business Area

SMBC Bank EU AG has been established as a new subsidiary of SMBC in Germany to mitigate the impact of BREXIT and the loss of the European passport.



It is a German incorporated legal entity operating under a German Banking licence supervised by BaFin. SMBC Bank EU AG has a dedicated risk management team in charge of designing, implementing, developing and maintaining the Bank’s risk management framework across the entity (enterprise risk) and the various risk types to which the entity is exposed.



The risk management team of the Bank is supported in this task by staff of SMBC BI, and the wider RMD EMEA group under a Service Level Agreement. In this context, the job holder is responsible for the credit risk management framework, the model risk management framework as well as aspects of the risk capital management framework.


Position Description

Accountabilities & Responsibilities



In the execution of the responsibilities, the job holder is accountable to the following:



* Lead the design, development, and maintenance of IFRS9 models (PD, LGD, EAD), ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and internal governance.
* Oversee the end-to-end IFRS9 process, including model calibration, validation, implementation, and ongoing performance monitoring.
* Collaborate with model development, validation, finance, and IT teams to ensure seamless integration of IFRS9 models into risk and finance systems.
* Ensure alignment of IFRS9 methodologies with the institution’s credit risk strategy, risk appetite, internal stress testing and capital planning frameworks.
* Provide subject matter expertise on IFRS9-related topics to senior management, internal committees, and external stakeholders (e.g., auditors, regulators).
* Support the ICAAP process by ensuring consistency between IFRS9 outputs and capital adequacy assessments.
* Monitor regulatory developments and industry best practices related to IFRS9 and credit risk modelling, ensuring timely updates to internal frameworks.
* Drive enhancements in data quality, model documentation, and governance processes.
* Mentor and lead junior team members, fostering a culture of analytical excellence and continuous improvement.



Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications



* Advanced degree in Finance, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative discipline.
* Several years of experience in credit risk management, with a strong focus on IFRS9 model development and governance.
* Deep understanding of credit risk modelling techniques, including statistical and econometric methods.
* Proven experience in managing IFRS9 frameworks within a banking or financial institution.
* Familiarity with regulatory expectations (e.g., ECB, EBA) and audit requirements related to IFRS9.
* Strong project management and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional initiatives.
* Proficiency in risk modelling tools and programming languages (e.g., Python, R, SAS, SQL) is highly desirable.
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical topics to non-technical stakeholders.
