Join SMEY as Analytical Chemistry Scientist
(Master/PhD/Postdoc with extensive GC and HPLC expertise)
Full-time | On-site | 82152 Martinsried, Am Klopferspitz 19 (IZB)
About Us:
SMEY cultivates the next generation of high-performance oils through biotechnology and a proprietary AI toolkit.
We tackle critical challenges in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food industries where traditional manufacturing methods often fall short.
As pioneers in precision fermentation, we craft sustainable, tailor-made and unique ingredients that enhance health, ensure full supply chain traceability, and support global scalability.
Job Overview:
We are looking for a professional Analytical Chemist with meticulous attention to detail to lead and execute testing of oils, proteins, and other bio-based ingredients from our bioprocesses.
You’ll develop and validate analytical methods, run release testing for product batches, compile Certificates of Analysis (CoAs), and partner closely with Process Development to ensure products meet industry standards and internal specs.
Key Responsibilities:
•Product Analysis: Conduct detailed analyses of oils, proteins, and other products using advanced techniques, including Gas Chromatography (GC-FID, GC-MS), High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and titration (incl. Karl Fischer and acid/base), etc.
•Method Development: Develop, optimize, and document analytical methods, translating them into clear SOPs.
•Method validation: Plan and perform in-house method validations (specificity, linearity, accuracy, precision, LoD/LoQ, range, robustness, system suitability) in line with ICH Q2(R2) and relevant regulatory guidance.
•Sample Preparation & Testing: Execute routine and non-routine analyses; Prepare samples and perform analyses to assess product purity, composition, and performance characteristics in alignment with project objectives.
•Release resting: Perform batch release testing against approved specifications and compile/review CoAs with complete traceability.
Data Interpretation & Reporting: Analyze and interpret complex data from chromatography and spectrometry experiments, providing clear reports and recommendations to the process development and R&D teams.
•Collaboration: Work closely with the Process Development team to provide timely and relevant analytical data that informs optimization of production processes and product quality.
Troubleshooting: Identify and troubleshoot technical issues related to analytical instrumentation, method performance, and sample preparation to maintain the highest level of data integrity.
Instrument Maintenance & Calibration: Ensure proper maintenance, calibration, and operation of analytical equipment such as GC-FID and HPLC systems.
•Documentation & Compliance: Maintain detailed and accurate records of all experimental protocols, raw data, and results, adhering to high internal standards for data integrity, accuracy, and transparency.
Qualification:
•Master’s Degree or PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field, with strong expertise in chromatography and spectrometry techniques.
•3-5 years of hands-on experience with GC-FID and HPLC for product analysis.
•Experience with complex matrices such as oils, lipids, and proteins; sharp attention to detail and data quality.
•Demonstrated ability to develop, optimize and perform validation of analytical methods for product characterization, including compositional and purity analysis.
•Strong data analysis and interpretation skills, with proficiency in analytical software and tools (e.g., ChemStation, Empower, or similar).
•Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail, particularly in the troubleshooting of instrumentation and data anomalies.
•Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic research environment.
Preferred Skills:
•Direct experience in a GxP environment and release testing.
•Experience with mass spectrometry (GC-MS, LC-MS) for product identification and quantification.
•Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
•DoE familiarity.
•Start-up company or bioprocessing company experience.
Why Join Us?
•Be part of a dynamic and fast-growing start-up shaping the future of food biotechnology through genetic and metabolic engineering.
•Work on innovative projects that have a real-world impact on sustainability and food production.
•Collaborate with a passionate, mission-driven team in an exciting, fast-paced work environment.
•Competitive salary and opportunities for professional growth.
