With its focus on future-relevant key technologies and the utilization of results in economy and industry, the Fraunhofer Society plays a central role in the innovation process. As a guide and source of inspiration for innovative developments and scientific excellence, it contributes to shaping our society and our future.
For over 35 years, the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology in Berlin has stood for excellence in production science. We are dedicated to bridging the gap between science and practice in the field of industrial production and offer application-oriented system solutions for the entire spectrum of industrial tasks – from product development to the production process, maintenance of capital goods, and recycling of products to the design and management of factory operations.
The Automation Technology division focuses on flexible robotic handling tasks, even outside of typical factory settings. Whether it’s a traditional robotic cell, a humanoid robot, or a mobile robotic system, we’re interested in how to design autonomous, flexible interaction with the environment. To achieve this, we draw on a wide variety of sensor solutions, AI-based control concepts, and traditional control algorithms as needed. We are currently working with partners in the automotive industry, agriculture, and electrical and medical engineering, among others, to enable and validate new automation concepts.
Be part of change
You will assist with an ongoing series of experiments focused on issues related to AI-based robot control. Specifically, the goal is to better understand the relationship between robotic tasks, the quality and quantity of training data, and the success rate of the AI-based control systems trained on this basis.
As part of your work, you will first familiarize yourself with a simulation environment for robotics, then collect training data for an AI controller within it, train the controller, and evaluate the success rate in the simulation. Depending on the duration of the internship and your personal skills, it may also be possible to transfer and repeat the experiments on one of our robot systems in the lab.
This internship may lead to a thesis. Additionally, employment as a student assistant is possible following the internship.
What you contribute
* You are currently a student majoring in or with an interest in computer science or a related field and are looking for an internship that meets the requirements of your academic program
* You have an analytical mindset, creativity, and a healthy dose of curiosity
* You work well in a team but are also capable of taking on responsibility independently or (in the future) taking the lead
* Sincerity, honesty, and loyalty are second nature to you
* You have at least 3 months available for a mandatory internship and are enrolled at a university
What we offer
* A great team and an open, collegial working environment
* Flexible working hours that can be combined with your studies
* An exciting and varied job at a leading research institute
* Opportunities to participate in current research projects
* Insight into modern technologies and innovative manufacturing processes
The weekly working time is 39 hours (full-time).
Remuneration is based on the federal guidelines for internship remuneration.
The duration of the thesis depends on the requirements of your university.
