The Leibniz Centre for Archaeology (LEIZA), a member of the Leibniz Association, is a globally active archaeological research institute and museum with its headquarters in Mainz and additional sites in Neuwied, Mayen and Schleswig. Since its foundation in 1852, the museum has been dedicated to the material legacy of three million years of human history with the aim of understanding human behaviour and actions as well as the development and transformation of societies.

A Journal Managing Editor (m/f/d)
(EG 13 TV-L, full-time or part-time)
LEIZA is planning a new, internationally oriented journal for the publication of fundamental findings from archaeology and its neighbouring sciences, in which qualitative and quantitative studies, theoretical and methodological reflections as well as results from archaeological field research, analyses and experiments can be published in various formats. The English-language journal will be published in Diamond Open Access.
As Managing Editor, you will be responsible for the development and establishment of the new international journal. In close cooperation with the publisher, the Editorial Board and the Advisory Board, you will help shape the new publication format and its content orientation, organise and supervise the publication process, and handle correspondence with board members, reviewers and authors. The position offers the opportunity to play a key role in shaping a new, innovative publication format in a dynamic environment and to continuously develop it for the international scientific community.
Research project and applicant requirements:
Your tasks:
* Collaboration in the conceptual development and introduction of the journal
* Cooperation with the committees and publishers
* Collaboration with international scientists
* Editorial support and strategic development of the journal
* Coordination of contributions from submission to publication
* Management of the peer review process and publication procedures
* Proofreading, editing and structuring of articles
* Ensuring compliance with scientific publication standards and open access principles (Diamond Open Access)
* Implementation and maintenance of modern publication technologies (JATS-XML, OJS)
* Development and implementation of measures to increase the international visibility of the journal
Your requirements profile:
* Doctorate in an archaeological or ancient studies discipline
* Advanced experience in scientific work and publishing (e.g. as an author, reviewer, etc.), ideally in journal management
* Outstanding communication and organisational skills
* English as a native language or comparable language competence at the highest level
* Knowledge of the international publishing landscape, the publishing industry and submission systems
Desirable:
* Very good written and spoken German
* Knowledge of publication-relevant application programmes (Adobe Creative Cloud, especially Indesign)
* Confident handling of scientific publication infrastructures (e.g. specialised databases) and publication standards (e.g. metadata standards, open science standards)
* Knowledge of XML, JATS-XML and experience with Open Journal Systems (OJS)

* Remuneration up to pay group 13 TV-L if the personal and collective agreement requirements are met.
