Beschreibung

The Faculty of Sciences at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and the Helmholtz Center Berlin for Materials and Energy (HZB) invite applications in a joint application procedure for an

Associate Professor of Experimental Physics Focusing on AI-Based Research of Biomolecular Structures (salary group W2)

at the Department of Physics. This is a full-time and permanent position to be filled by the earliest possible starting date. The professorship also entails the leadership of a department at HZB.

The HZB is one of the 18 research centers in the Helmholtz Association and operates one of the world’s most productive facilities for the structural analysis of macromolecular structures at the synchrotron radiation source BESSY II. To efficiently analyze the large volumes of data obtained and to solve complex macromolecular structures, the development and use of artificial intelligence and machine learning will increasingly be required.

FAU and HZB are jointly appointing a professorship for the use of artificial intelligence in the research of biomolecular structures. The appointed person should have extensive international experience in the fields of:

* neural networks, machine learning, and software design,
* protein structure and functions,
* structure determination of macromolecules using cryo-electron microscopy and X-ray crystallography, as well as
* small molecule structure elucidation using crystallographic methods.

The focus of the research should be on the development of AI-based analysis methods for macromolecular single crystal diffraction data. Furthermore, experience in leading research groups, managing scientific projects, acquiring third-party funding, and engaging in national and international collaborations is required. A willingness to collaborate within the Department of Physics, particularly by introducing AI-based methods into the areas of light and matter, quantum materials, biophysics, new materials and processes, as well as initiating or participating in collaborative research centers and other research networks, is expected. Teaching at the Department of Physics at FAU amounts to at least two hours per week per semester.

Further responsibilities of the professorship include leading and developing staff and supporting early-career researchers. Candidates must act in awareness of gender equality, diversity sensitivity, and sustainability. Contributions to knowledge and technology transfer are highly desirable, initiatives for internationalization are welcomed, and participation in committees and commissions is also expected.

Successful candidates should demonstrate an excellent academic track record in research and teaching at the highest international standards. They should have substantial research experience abroad and/or international cooperations as well as experience in managing research projects and in raising third-party funding. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree as well as a passion for education and relevant teaching experience are prerequisites. Candidates who are able and willing to teach in both English and German are preferred. The position also requires additional postdoctoral qualifications. These should be in the form of a habilitation (postdoctoral thesis) or equivalent academic qualifications. These qualifications may also have been achieved in a non-university context or through a junior faculty position (for example as Assistant Professor).

The successful applicant should become actively involved in administering academic affairs and in developing strategic initiatives. FAU pursues a policy of intense student mentoring and therefore expects its teaching staff to be present during lecture periods.

FAU offers an outstandingly productive research environment as well as a passionate and multi-disciplinary scholarly community within a vibrant institutional network.

In its pursuit of academic excellence, FAU is committed to equality of opportunity and to a proactive and inclusive approach, which supports and encourages all under-represented groups, promotes an inclusive culture, and values diversity. FAU is a family-friendly employer and responsive to the needs of dual career couples.

FAU and the HZB aim to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and strongly encourage qualified female scientists to apply. We expect a good knowledge of the German language and a willingness to teach in German after an appropriate transition period. People with severe disabilities will be given preferential consideration if they have the same qualifications. Applications from people with a migration background are strongly encouraged.

Please submit your complete application documents in English with a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a research concept with current and future research projects (2 pages), teaching profile and experience, a gender and diversity concept outline (max. 1 page), a list of courses taught, copies of certificates and academic records (including transcripts for international degrees), a complete list of publications, and a list of third-party funded projects online at by August 31, 2025, addressed to the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences. Please contact nat-dekanat@fau.de with any questions.
