Are you looking for an exciting challenge that will help shape the future? Then become part of our #OneTeam and write your thesis together with us and in cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University.
Topic: Investigation of laser polishing of 100Cr6 roller bearing steel to improve tribological properties.
Surface topography plays a key role in reducing friction, wear and energy losses in tribologically stressed components. In bearings in particular, it influences the running-in phase and thus longevity and energy efficiency. Conventional processes such as superfinishing achieve very smooth surfaces, but reach their limits when it comes to complex geometries, small components and sustainability aspects. Laser polishing offers a resource-saving alternative here, as local melting creates a functionally advantageous surface that potentially enables a more stable and low-friction running-in phase.
The aim of this work is to systematically investigate the influence of different grinding conditions and laser parameters on the resulting surface quality and to understand the relationships between process control and tribological functionality.
What you will do
* As part of your work, you will systematically investigate the influence of different laser polishing parameters on the resulting surface properties of 100Cr6 (e.g., roughness, wear ratio, oil retention volume, microstructure)
* Depending on your interests, you can focus on process engineering, materials engineering, or tribological issues
What you bring to the table
* You are studying mechanical engineering, physics, materials engineering or a comparable degree programme
* You enjoy experimental work
* You are characterised by a structured, independent and precise way of working
* Knowledge of surface analysis or laser material processing is helpful, but not a prerequisite
* Good German or English skills round off your profile
What you can expect
