In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT offers the opportunity to write a thesis.
Laser metal deposition (LMD) is an industrially established additive manufacturing process for producing complex components, which is used in the aerospace industry, among others. The cost-effectiveness of the process is largely determined by the consumption of the metallic powder material used. In this context, the ILT has developed a novel control concept for the powder-gas jet that enables the filler material to be diverted between the process area and a collection container with virtually no delay. The optimal design of such a fluidically controlled powder switch requires a fundamental understanding of the interactions of all design-related influencing factors, which will be developed in this work using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations.
Be part of change
* You will design and build a test rig to quantitatively measure the performance of the powder switch
* You will model different geometric designs and perform CFD simulations to derive causal relationships
* You will validate the results of your simulations directly on the test rig, thereby optimizing the development process
What you contribute
* You are enrolled in mechanical engineering, CES, simulation sciences, process engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or a similar degree program
* You are known for your independent, organized, and structured approach to work
* Ideally, you have some practical experience in CFD simulation (e.g., Ansys Fluent) and CAD design, as well as a broad technical interest and manual dexterity
