Accounting Specialist / Accounting Policies & Controls (f/m/d)

This is not your typical accounting role. You will combine deep IFRS expertise with genuine intellectual curiosity and an interest in digital tools to redefine how accounting policies are governed and applied at one of the world's leading asset managers.

As a member of the Global Accounting & Financial Management team at Allianz Global Investors, you will be the authoritative internal voice on IFRS accounting policy — advising our business stakeholders, coordinating with Allianz SE and external audit, and driving the control framework that underpins our financial reporting. You will own the IFRS agenda proactively, shaping policy before change happens rather than reacting to it.

The role sits at a unique intersection: technical IFRS depth, management reporting, control framework governance, and a genuine opportunity to develop smarter, more digital ways of working. If you thrive on translating complex accounting standards into clear guidance, enjoy stakeholder influence, and are not satisfied with the status quo, this role is for you.

You are intellectually curious about accounting standards — not just compliant with them. You enjoy being the person others turn to when a hard IFRS question arises. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity and working across cultures and functions. You are not satisfied with 'we've always done it this way' and look for smarter approaches. And you want a role where your work genuinely shapes how a global asset manager reports its financials.

In return, you will have access to ongoing IFRS training, industry events, and a broad network within the Allianz Group finance community. You will work in a small, high-calibre team where your contribution is visible and your development is taken seriously.

The Accounting Policies & Controls team is part of the Global Accounting & Financial Management function at Allianz Global Investors. We are a small, specialist team with a unique mandate: we combine IFRS technical expertise, management reporting, and control framework ownership in a single function — something you will not find in most accounting teams.

We work closely with regional accounting functions across the globe, as well as with Allianz Asset Management GmbH, Allianz SE, and external audit. Project work is a constant feature of our agenda, and we are actively developing more digital and data-driven ways of working.

This role will be based in Frankfurt or Munich.

What you will do

The role combines four interconnected areas of ownership and responsibility:

IFRS Policy Leadership, Internal Advisory & Management:

  • Act as the de-facto internal IFRS advisor to senior finance leadership, providing authoritative technical guidance on complex financial products, transactions, and accounting policy questions.
  • Strategically monitor the IFRS standard-setting landscape to prepare management and the organisation well in advance for new or amended requirements — assessing potential impacts and ensuring timely adoption and compliance.
  • Serve as the central hub of information for management and regional accounting functions on IFRS developments, state-of-the-art industry practice, and accounting policy changes across the Allianz Group.
  • Prepare high-quality IFRS accounting memos and technical position papers; foster alignment and obtain required approvals from key stakeholders including Allianz Asset Management GmbH, Allianz SE, and external audit.
  • Analyse notable events and business transactions, conclude on critical accounting decisions and ensure timely reporting to senior management and relevant stakeholders within Allianz Group.

Control Framework & Quality Assurance:

  • Own your respective area of the Accounting & Financial Management control framework, performing ongoing risk assessments and control evaluations to support accurate and reliable financial reporting.
  • Operate and coordinate selected global processes related to specific accounting topics (e.g., confidential HR-related matters, project expense capitalisation), including regular planning, financial analysis, booking advice, and control of appropriate recording.
  • Apply continuous Journal Entry Testing and analytical validation controls, leveraging digital tools where appropriate.
  • Work in close collaboration with Risk Management, Internal and External Auditors, the Compliance & Controls Team, and outsourcing providers.

Process Improvement & Digital Ways of Working:

  • Proactively identify, design, and drive end-to-end process improvements across all activities, with particular focus on onshore/offshore handover points and respective validation controls.
  • Explore and apply digital and AI-enabled tools to enhance testing, controls, and analytical workflows — contributing to a forward-looking finance function without losing sight of rigour and accuracy.
  • Champion a continuous-improvement mindset across the team, bringing fresh perspectives on how established accounting processes can be made smarter and more efficient.

Stakeholder Coordination & Project Work:

  • Liaise with AAM / Allianz Group on accounting policy changes and ensure consistent application across regional accounting functions.
  • Coordinate cross-functional processes and serve as a reliable point of contact for key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to and lead project work as an integral component of the role, including implementation of new accounting standards and regulatory requirements.

What you bring

  • Detailed knowledge of IFRS — you are genuinely comfortable with complex accounting standards, can write a technical position paper, and can advise senior stakeholders with confidence.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field — or equivalent professional qualification (e.g., ACCA, CPA, WP/Wirtschaftsprüfer).
  • Strong analytical and communication skills — highly detail-oriented, able to analyse complex data sets and communicate conclusions through clear narratives and structured reporting.
  • Business-level English — our working language in an international team; strong written and verbal communication is essential.
  • Proactive, ownership mindset — you identify problems before they escalate and drive continuous operational improvements without being asked.
  • 4+ years of relevant professional experience in technical accounting, accounting policy, audit, or a related advisory role — or equivalent depth of expertise (e.g., from a standard-setting or Big 4 advisory background).
  • Experience in financial services — asset management, insurance, banking, or fund accounting environments are all relevant given the IFRS topics in scope.
  • Experience with digital or AI-enabled tools in a finance context — an interest in exploring new ways of working is more important than prior expertise.
  • German language proficiency — valuable for stakeholder communication within the Allianz Group and in the Frankfurt/Munich market.
  • Technology skills — strong Excel modelling skills.
  • Ability to manage tight deadlines and prioritise effectively in a fast-paced, multifaceted, and often ambiguous environment.
  • Offshore / shared service centre experience — familiarity with onshore/offshore operating models and related coordination challenges and ERP technology skills — experience with SAP or similar ERP systems would be nice to have.

What we offer

  • We empower our employees by ensuring flexible work arrangements that maintain a balance between performance, productivity, career development and personal priorities (e.g., hybrid model/ flexible working hours)
  • Securing your future: Access to company pension/savings plans
  • Family support (relocation/ childcare facilities)
  • Company share purchasing plan
  • Mental health and wellbeing programs
  • Mobility solutions (Jobrad bike leasing, subvention Jobticket)
  • Career opportunities within the entire Allianz Group
  • Self-guided learning & development
  • Volunteering time
  • … and so much more!
