Director - Credit Risk & Regulatory Compliance Lead
We are working with a Global Bank who are seeking an experienced credit risk professional to lead the development, implementation, and ongoing enhancement of their credit risk management framework. This role is central to ensuring compliance with ECB direct supervision and BaFin requirements, while aligning with global risk standards.
You will act as a key liaison with regulators, drive strategic risk initiatives, and partner with stakeholders across regions to strengthen credit governance, frameworks, and decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory Compliance & Supervisory Engagement
* Lead the development and maintenance of credit risk frameworks in line with ECB and BaFin expectations.
* Act as the primary contact for regulatory authorities, managing inspections, reviews, and ongoing engagement.
* Ensure accurate and timely submission of all regulatory deliverables.
* Monitor regulatory developments and proactively advise senior management on implications for strategy and operations.
Credit Risk Strategy & Framework Development
* Design and implement a robust credit risk framework aligned with regulatory requirements and global risk appetite.
* Enhance the Risk Appetite Framework, underwriting standards, and risk acceptance criteria.
* Collaborate with regional and global teams to ensure policies are adapted to local regulatory expectations.
Audit, Reviews & Remediation
* Prepare for and manage ECB and BaFin inspections and thematic reviews.
* Lead responses to regulatory findings, ensuring timely and effective remediation.
* Drive internal action plans to strengthen credit risk governance, including ESG integration.
Project Leadership & Cross-Functional Coordination
* Lead strategic credit risk initiatives across regions, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements.
* Coordinate with stakeholders across all three lines of defence.
* Deliver cross-functional projects to enhance risk frameworks, processes, and consistency across jurisdictions.
Systems & Data Governance
* Partner with IT and data teams to ensure systems support effective risk monitoring and reporting.
* Oversee enhancements to align data capture with risk appetite and underwriting standards.
* Ensure compliance with BCBS 239 principles for risk data aggregation and reporting.
ESG Risk Integration
* Embed ESG considerations into credit risk assessment and decision-making processes.
* Work with global teams to ensure ESG risks are consistently identified, measured, and reported.
Stakeholder Engagement & Communication
* Build strong relationships with regulators and internal stakeholders.
* Provide clear communication to senior management and risk committees on regulatory expectations.
* Lead training initiatives to strengthen understanding of credit risk frameworks and regulatory standards.
Credit Assessment & Transaction Oversight
* Review and approve credit transactions within delegated authority limits.
* Provide robust challenge to front office assumptions and credit proposals.
* Assess risks in credit applications, due diligence, and legal documentation.
* Lead credit assessments and present recommendations to senior decision-makers.
Portfolio Management
* Oversee leveraged loan portfolio activities, including approvals and reviews.
* Assess credit strategies, annual reviews, and special credit cases.
* Monitor high-risk obligors and ensure appropriate grading, provisioning, and reporting.
Team Leadership & Development
* Develop and deliver training on credit analysis, grading, and documentation.
* Mentor and support junior team members, fostering capability and performance.
Governance & Compliance
* Ensure full adherence to internal policies, regulatory standards, and best practices.
Candidate Profile
* Deep expertise in ECB and BaFin regulatory frameworks, particularly in credit risk.
* Proven experience developing risk appetite frameworks, underwriting standards, and credit policies.
* Strong project management track record in regulatory-driven initiatives.
* Experience integrating ESG risk into credit processes.
* Extensive credit market experience across multiple credit cycles, ideally in leading financial institutions.
* Degree or relevant professional qualification (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CFA).
* Strong leadership and stakeholder management skills.
* Advanced analytical and financial modelling capabilities.
* Ability to assess risk from an enterprise-wide perspective.
