Job Description: In order to support the AOCS/GNC & Flight Dynamics department, Airbus Defence and Space is looking for an Master student (d/f/m): Optimisation-based and probabilistic worst-case analysis of uncertain satellite systems You are looking for a master thesis and want to get to know the work of an engineer (d/f/m)? Then apply now! We look forward to you supporting us in the AOCS/GNC & Flight Dynamics department as a master student (d/f/m)! Location: Immenstaad Start: As soon as possible Duration: 6 months Topic When a satellite’s control system is switched-on for the first time in orbit, it must operate as specified. Compared to other disciplines, in space, test campaigns within the final operational environment are not feasible. Even more, considering uncertainties within typical model-based robustness analyses is crucial, since every model of a real physical system is uncertain. Typical satellite uncertainties include mass properties or alignments. The uncertainty analysis helps to quantify the influence of the uncertain parameters on system properties such as stability margins and pointing performance. One approach to uncertainty analysis is to identify the worst-case parameter-set that leads to the worst performance metrics, i.e., the worst pointing performance. Optimisation-based algorithms are generic tools to find these worst cases. Another approach is to assess the failure probability for given requirements. The analysis ends up in the computation of a probability integral through efficient numerical integration. Both approaches might find requirement violations more efficiently compared to traditional approaches such as Monte Carlo analysis. You shall analyse advanced optimisation-based and probabilistic worst-case analysis for accelerating Verification and Validation (V&V) of satellite Attitude and Orbital Control Systems (AOCS). Based on the current literature, various optimisation algorithms and probability analysis methods shall be compiled into a toolbox architecture, which can interface with existing AOCS simulators and models. Current Earth-observation missions will serve as benchmark applications to test the effectiveness compared to traditional approaches. You will learn about: Applied optimisation, uncertainty quantification, spacecraft attitude dynamics, robustness analysis. Your location At the Airbus site in Friedrichshafen you will be working on innovation where others spend their holidays. Enjoy panoramic views of Lake Constance while having lunch in our canteen. And after work, join one of our many corporate sports groups to go running, sailing or skiing. Your benefits Attractive salary and work-life balance with an 35-hour week (flexitime). Mobile working after agreement with the department. International environment with the opportunity to network globally. Work with modern/diversified technologies. At Airbus, we see you as a valuable team member and you are not hired to brew coffee, instead you are in close contact with the interfaces and are part of our weekly team meetings. Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus Community to expand your own network. Your tasks and responsibilities Conduct a literature review on state-of-the-art optimisation algorithms Develop a tool architecture for optimisation-based and probabilistic algorithms applied to existing AOCS simulators and models Trade-off, select, and implement optimisation-based and probabilistic algorithms Application to AOCS benchmark scenarios Detailed comparison and assessment of efficiency gain Documentation of the tool and results Desired skills and qualifications Enrolled as Aerospace Engineering or Cybernetics Master student (d/f/m) or similar field of study Very good knowledge of MATLAB / Simulink Very good knowledge of dynamics and robust control Experience in optimisation algorithms First experience in uncertainty quantification beneficial English is mandatory German would be an asset Please upload the following documents: cover letter, CV, relevant transcripts, enrollment certificate.
