Join us as a
Energy Management System (EMS) Engineer – BESS Applications (m/f/d)
Become a key technical leader in our mission to build next-generation stationary energy storage solutions. In this role, you will develop the intelligent core that optimizes Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for performance, revenue, and grid stability across European markets. You will design, implement, and validate the advanced algorithms that control how our BESS operates and trades in real-world environments. Your work will directly optimize battery dispatch for market participation (e.g., energy arbitrage, FCR, aFRR) and ensure seamless integration with hardware, trading platforms, and grid requirements.
Your mission
* Algorithm Development & Strategy: Designing, simulating, and implementing advanced EMS control strategies for optimal BESS dispatch across multiple market conditions and applications (front-of-meter, behind-the-meter).
* System Modeling & Integration: Developing and Integrating high-fidelity models of batteries, power conversion, and management systems into ESS solutions to maximize performance and revenue while adhering to physical constraints.
* Advanced Optimization: Developing and supporting advanced optimization models (linear, nonlinear, AI-based) and forecasting algorithms for multi-objective energy management.
* Prototype Validation: Contributing to EMS prototype design and testing using HIL/CHIL environments to validate algorithm performance and reliability.
* Technical Insight & Collaboration: Provided key insights into next-generation stationary energy solutions with a strong focus on European market requirements. Collaborated closely with software, hardware, and BESS-controller development teams to ensure seamless and successful system integration.
Your areas of expertise
* Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, Control Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
* Robust background in energy systems modeling, optimization, forecasting algorithms, and control strategies, with practical application to modern energy systems.
* Strong proficiency in Python for advanced algorithm development, system modeling, and data-driven analysis.
* Knowledge of C/C++
* Demonstrated experience in power system modeling and simulation (e.g., DigSILENT, Modelica).
* BESS-specific experience: Familiarity with BESS architectures, components, and operation. Direct experience with energy management algorithms for battery systems is required.
Nice-to-haves
* Experience with SCADA systems or EMS/SCADA development.
* Understanding of European electricity markets, flexibility services, and grid operation.
* Hands-on experience with embedded systems, CHIL/HIL testing, or EMS development.
* Experience leading project teams and excellent communication skills for a multicultural, international environment (fluent English required; Chinese or other European languages are a plus).
* Professional experience with Linux operating systems.
