As part of its strategic planning, the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) is pursuing the consistent further development of its focal research areas in molecular cell biology, neurosciences, cardiovascular medicine and oncology under the umbrella topic „metabolic plasticity“ and translational approaches as partner sites of the health research centers German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK), German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) and German Center for Child and Adolescent Health (DZKJ). The UMG is closely networking on the Göttingen Campus with the natural and life sciences institutions of the university as well as the non-university institutions on site.

University Professorship in Medicine and Society
(salary grade W2, fixed term with tenure track)
is to be filled to begin on April 1, 2027. The initial appointment will be for a period of five years. Following a positive evaluation, the position will be converted to a tenured professorship (W2) without a new call for applications.
The position seeks a research-oriented scholar with a nationally and internationally visible academic profile to conduct research and teaching on the interaction between medicine, society, and politics using interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches. The professorship is intended to give visibility and conceptual clarity to the research fields of the health humanities and stakeholder involvement in the German context through innovative approaches and to establish them sustainably as academic fields in Göttingen.
Research interests relating to ethical reflection on the increasing digitalization of healthcare and the role of new media in the interaction between medicine, society, and politics are particularly welcome. The successful candidate is expected to connect their work to the research priorities of the University Medical Centre Göttingen as well as of Georg August University Göttingen. The opportunity to actively participate in innovative research projects and collaborative research networks with a focus on stakeholder involvement - such as the German Centre for Child and Adolescent Health (DZKJ) or the Lower Saxony Centre for Evidence-Based Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (CAIMED) - makes this professorship a unique opportunity for committed academics.
Applicants should have an interdisciplinary academic profile in the humanities, social sciences, or political science, as well as in medical ethics.
In teaching, engagement is expected in the degree programs in Medicine, Dentistry, and Molecular Medicine. In addition, participation in one of the ethics committees of UMG is expected.
Willingness to contribute to academic self-governance, a high level of commitment to teaching, and the supervision of early-career researchers are required.
Furthermore, a positively evaluated junior professorship or habilitation, or equivalent academic achievements, an independent academic profile with a corresponding record of publications, and demonstrated teaching ability are expected.
Further requirements for the appointment of university professors are laid out in the current version of § 25 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Lower Saxony. The University Medical Center Göttingen reserves the right of appointment.
