About the Role
As an Associate or Senior Editor, you will support the Chief Editor and Deputy Editors of Scientific Reports in managing the Editorial Board and editorial decision-making processes across the journal. You will support content delivery by making editorial decisions, and managing peer review for specific manuscripts. Key performance indicators include rapid publication, sound peer-review practices, and high levels of service to authors, reviewers and Editorial Board Members (EBMs). This is a fantastic opportunity for somebody with a passion for science to break into an editorial career on a high-profile, fast-paced, multidisciplinary journal.
The position is offered on a full-time, fixed-term maternity cover basis and will be based in our London, Berlin, Heidelberg, Jersey City or New York on a hybrid working basis.
Role responsibilities:
* Assist in the daily management of the journal workflow, acting as handling editor on manuscripts, providing rapid, constructive peer-review and publication decisions
* Contribute to content development by working with the Editorial Board on the commissioning and publication of subject-specific collections
* Promptly resolve pre- and post- publication issues raised by staff, EBMs and readers (e.g. authorship, scope, ethics and consent, misconduct)
* Input to policy development initiatives and implement editorial policy
* Establish and maintain relationships with EBMs; support the recruitment and training of new EBMs where required
* Community outreach, to EBMs, and potential authors, including participation at international and national conferences as required.
* Sign-off social media and marketing content
Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
Essential
* PhD-level research experience or equivalent in climate sciences or sustainability.
* Thorough understanding of the scientific research community and its needs
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills
* Sound knowledge of and interest in science in general
* Highly self-motivated, resourceful and achievement-oriented
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
* Strong workload management and organisational skills
* Active, supportive team player with an adaptable and flexible approach
* Willingness to travel
Desirable:
* Editorial experience is not required, although applicants with significant editorial experience are encouraged to apply and will potentially be considered for Senior Editor positions.
