The Institute of Vehicle Concepts (FK) of the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) is internationally recognised for the design of future road and rail vehicles that enable climate and environmentally friendly mobility while being affordable and user-friendly at the same time. We research and demonstrate the required key technologies and maintain close cooperation with other scientific institutions as well as industrial and political bodies. ## What to expect You will work at the intersection of biomechanics and vehicle safety, with an opportunity to apply machine learning methods. In this project, you will focus on implementing a virtual human arm model with active muscles, capable of generating realistic human motion. You will gain hands-on experience in finite element modelling and biomechanical problems, contribute to state-of-the-art safety research, and develop a concrete deliverable as the outcome of your thesis. Along the way, you’ll be supported in performing a focused literature review, exploring innovative methods, and tailoring the project direction to your background and interests. ## Your tasks - Implement active muscle representations into a pre-existing arm model in LS-DYNA - Working with state-of-the-art active muscle material – Extended Hill-Type model (EHTM) – to generate realistic human motion - Conduct a focused literature review to position your work in the field - Run simulations to evaluate biomechanical model responses - Analyzing results, identifying key challenges and limitations - Apply machine learning and/or optimization to model control or movement patterns, with room for creativity ## Your profile - Ongoing scientific university studies in the field of mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, biomechanics, computational mechanics, computer science, mathematics, machine learning or similar degree programmes in the natural and engineering sciences Knowledge and experience in using finite element software, preferably LS-DYNA - Knowledge of Python or another programming language is advantageous - Problem solving skills and ability to work independently - Interest in machine learning applications to engineering and biomechanics - Knowledge on biomechanics of the human body is advantageous ## We offer DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people.
