Embedded Software Engineer – Senior HMI Developer (m/f/d)
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior HMI Embedded Software Engineer to join our team in developing software for Heart-Lung Machines and other life-critical medical devices. In this role, you will focus on the architecture, design, and implementation of Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) on Embedded Linux platforms, contributing to highly usable, safe, secure, and performant software.
Reporting to the Manager – Embedded Software Engineering, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with IEC 62304 Class C standards. The ideal candidate brings several years of experience in embedded HMI/GUI development, especially using Qt in regulated medical or safety‑critical industries, and has already contributed to or driven software architecture and documentation activities.
General Responsibilities
1. Design, develop, and maintain HMI applications for embedded medical devices, ensuring a responsive, intuitive, and safe user interface.
2. Implement software solutions on Embedded Linux platforms, using modern programming languages and UI frameworks.
3. Collaborate closely with software architects, firmware engineers, test engineers, and technical leads to ensure feature implementation aligns with design specifications and safety requirements.
4. Lead or contribute to the definition of software requirements, software architecture documentation, design reviews, code reviews, and risk assessments.
5. Apply unit testing, static analysis, and best practices to ensure high software quality and maintainability.
6. Support integration, debugging, and system verification activities.
7. Ensure end‑to‑end traceability from requirements to implementation and testing, in line with regulatory expectations.
8. Create and maintain high-quality software documentation (architecture, design, implementation, verification) to support regulatory submissions and audits.
Skills and Experience
9. Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
10. Several years of professional experience in embedded HMI software development, ideally within medical devices or other regulated safety‑critical industries, with demonstrable contributions to product‑grade software.
11. Strong experience in Qt-based HMI/GUI development for Embedded Linux in a product development environment.
12. Demonstrated experience in software architecture and design, including design documentation and structured decision-making.
13. Deep understanding of medical or safety‑critical software development processes; experience with IEC 62304 Class C is highly advantageous.
14. Proficiency in C++ (modern C++ required); Python is a plus.
15. Solid experience with Embedded Linux and build systems such as Yocto or Buildroot.
16. Understanding of HMI design principles, usability, and user-centered development.
17. Strong experience applying unit testing, static code analysis, and ensuring compliance with MISRA C++ or CERT C++ standards.
18. Familiarity with communication protocols such as CAN, Ethernet, and USB.
19. Working knowledge of IEC 62304, ISO 13485, ISO 14971 is an advantage.
20. Experience with Git, Jira, Confluence, and Agile development practices.
21. Strong problem-solving and debugging skills in complex embedded environments.
22. Excellent collaboration and communication skills.
23. Comfortable working in a regulated, safety-critical environment.
