The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is looking to appoint an outstanding scientist to a

Tenured Professorship
„General Botany“(W3 salary)

at the Faculty of Natural Sciences I — Biosciences, Institute of Biology. The position is available from April 2026 onwards.

In line with the MLU's long-term vision for knowledge and learning, sustainability, and transformation, the successful candidate is expected to address key questions in the field of “sustainability”. The professorship in 'General Botany' will bolster the faculty's focal areas (molecular plant science, biodiversity, and RNA/protein biology) through interdisciplinary research activities.

As part of the strategic development of the Collaborative Research Center (CRC 1664), we are seeking an outstanding scientist who will make significant contributions to the field of molecular plant science. We are expecting candidates to establish links with another focal area, biodiversity research, particularly in the context of iDiv priorities. This professorship is open to a broad spectrum of research themes, with the goal of developing further interdisciplinary approaches and initiating joint research initiatives. In a ‘Research Statement’, candidates should clearly demonstrate how they will strengthen synergies between the focal areas of research at the faculty, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, enrich existing research consortia (CRC 1664), and develop future joint research initiatives (e.g., RTG or Research Units).

We are looking for a team player with an innovative research concept, which reflects our commitment to cultivating a dynamic and forward-thinking academic environment. Junior group leaders at an early stage of their career, who have already demonstrated scientific excellence through a strong publication record and by securing competitive third-party funding, are strongly encouraged to apply.

We attach great importance to applicants' pedagogical skills. Teaching responsibilities include major courses in Cell Biology and General Botany and contributions to Plant Physiology at Bachelor and Master levels, including Secondary School teachers. Applicants are encouraged to submit a teaching statement outlining their pedagogical approaches and specific ideas tailored to the study programs offered at our faculty.

Further duties and responsibilities are stipulated in section 34 of the Saxony-Anhalt State Law of Universities.

Applicants need to fulfill the pre-conditions of appointment as stipulated in section 35 of the Saxony-Anhalt State Law of Universities. Particular emphasis is placed on a Habilitation in the relevant field, or an equivalent level of scientific achievement and recognition. Candidates are expected to have attained the appropriate level of experience or qualification in teaching.

The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is committed to diversity and aims to create an inclusive environment where our staff and students feel valued and inspired. In particular, we aim to increase the proportion of women appointed as permanent staff; therefore, appropriately qualified female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply for this position.

The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg strives to provide an environment compatible with work-life balance and has been certified as a family-friendly university since 2009.

Applications from candidates with disabilities are particularly welcome and will be given preference in the event of equivalent qualification.

Applications with curriculum vitae, certificates, description of academic career, list of all publications and successful third-party funding as well as a teaching record including evaluations are requested by 08 .08.2025via the appointment portal of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, stating the private address:
