The following professorship in the field of computer science is to be filled as soon as possible in the Faculty of Environmental Planning/ Environmental Technology at the Birkenfeld Environmental Campus:
W2-Professorship „Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering“
Tasks
The department of computer science stands for application-oriented education, a clear focus on innovative topics in research, and interdisciplinary projects in both areas of the subject. In third-party funded research, which is usually carried out in cooperation with partners from industry, projects with an annual volume of around 2 million euros are handled at the Institute for Software Systems.
The professorship is responsible for teaching and research in the field of artificial intelligence and software engineering. We are looking for a committed individual who will represent and further develop this field in both theoretical and practical terms in bachelor's and master's degree programs in the Department of Environmental Planning/Environmental Technology (UP/UT), particularly in computer science and engineering programs. The planned teaching includes courses in the areas of “Software Engineering and Distributed Systems” and “Operating Systems” at the bachelor's level and “Optimization and Machine Learning” at the master's level.
Courses are to be offered in German and English.
In addition to a high level of commitment to teaching, participation in the academic self-administration of the university is also expected.

Recruitment

A successfully completed university degree in computer science is required, as well as:
1. Sound scientific expertise in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and
methods of machine learning and their applications.
2. Relevant, in-depth professional experience in the following areas:
• Development of distributed software systems,
• Application of AI in software development.
In addition, scientific or professional experience in at least two of the following areas is expected:
• Generative AI, deep learning,
• Autonomous AI agents, multi-agent systems,
• Industrial software development, CI/CD pipelines,
• Virtualization, containerization,
• Edge computing and embedded systems.
Excellent German language skills at level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and a sound knowledge of English are also required. The willingness to teach interdisciplinary basic courses (e.g., mathematics, programming, computer science for students from other disciplines) and to conduct courses in English is also required.
In the field of AI, the Department of Computer Science has a very well-equipped laboratory for teaching, research, and transfer, which is to be managed and further developed by the professorship. The numerous demonstrators available are used to conduct laboratory-based courses and transfer events for students and companies.
Profile in the area of research and transfer: The responsible acquisition of third-party funding, active participation in cooperative research projects, and collaboration with companies and institutions in the region to promote knowledge and technology transfer are essential components of the profile. The professorship can build on the extensive project acquisition of the previous incumbent. The incumbent will be expected to participate in the Institute for Software Systems, cooperate with other scientific institutions and working groups at the university, and contribute to the university's research profile. Membership in the doctoral cluster “Applied Computer Science” in Rhineland-Palatinate is desired.

In addition to the general civil service requirements, the minimum requirements for employment are:
1. a successfully completed university degree in the field of computer science,
2. pedagogical aptitude, which is usually demonstrated by experience in teaching, training, or corresponding university-level continuing education,
3. special aptitude for scientific work, which is usually demonstrated by a qualified doctorate, and
4. in addition, special achievements in the application or development of scientific knowledge and methods in at least five years of relevant professional practice, of which at least three years must have been outside the university sector.
Appointment is made to permanent civil service status if the relevant conditions under civil service law are met.
