The Nau research group invites applications for a Senior Scientist (m/f/d) to join the CARAMEL project (Covalent Chaotropic Membrane Transport for Biotherapeutic Delivery), funded by the European Research Council (ERC) Synergy Grant, CARAMEL. Project overview: The CARAMEL project aims to design boron cluster derivatives that interact with and traverse biological membranes, enabling enhanced intracellular delivery of biotherapeutics. This interdisciplinary research combines synthetic chemistry, membrane biophysics, and supramolecular interactions. Your Responsibilities: The selected candidate will contribute to the following tasks within the project framework: Design and perform multi-step synthesis of novel boron cluster derivatives, including purification and comprehensive structural characterization. Physico-chemical characterization of their interactions with cellular membrane models, including liposomes of different membrane composition. Mechanistic studies of membrane transport, employing advanced fluorescence-based assays. Project management and student supervision. This position is embedded in a collaborative scientific environment where the successful candidate with potential research visits in the laboratories of the ERC synergy partners in the University of Bern (Switzerland, Prof. P. Luciani), Philipps-Universität Marburg (Germany, Prof. O. Hantschel), or Santiago de Compostela (Spain, Prof. J. Montenegro). Starting date: 1st April 2026 or earliest suitable date. The contract is limited to the duration of the project. Your Profile: At least 10 years research experience after completion of a PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field. Strong own publication record in high-impact peer-reviewed journals. Solid expertise in synthetic chemistry and analytical techniques (NMR, LC-MS, HPLC, UV-vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy). Practical experience in supramolecular interactions, membrane biophysics, and associated techniques. Proficiency in written and spoken English. Experience in scientific writing, including articles and project proposals. An independent, proactive working style combined with excellent teamwork, strong organizational, timemanaging, and problem-solving skills.
