Our client is a growing fintech startup in Hamburg that is rethinking how businesses and individuals manage payments, finance, and compliance in the digital age. Backed by strong investors and a clear product-market fit, they’re entering their next phase of growth and looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager to help scale their technology and team.
This role is ideal for someone who wants to shape engineering culture from the ground up, remain technically engaged, and work on meaningful financial products in a regulated, fast-paced environment. The company culture values engineering quality, clean design, and pragmatic problem-solving.
With a team of ~25 employees (and a tech team of 10), they’ve already earned the trust of early enterprise customers and are preparing for further expansion in the DACH and EU regions.
Your Role
* Lead and grow a cross-functional team of engineers
* Collaborate closely with product managers and domain experts in fintech and compliance
* Set clear goals and processes, mentor engineers, and help foster a high-performance team culture
* Own and evolve the technical roadmap alongside tech leads and the CTO
* Contribute hands-on when needed (architecture decisions, code reviews, technical direction)
* Oversee the technical quality of the codebase, system design, and infrastructure
* Participate in architectural decisions, code reviews, and problem-solving
* Help the team navigate technical decisions, unblock challenges, and support their career development
* Help scale the team through hiring and onboarding as the company grows
Ideal Background
* 5+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 1-2 years in a leadership role
* Strong backend foundation; ideally with JVM-based languages OR other modern scalable stacks
* Experience building financial or transactional systems, or working in regulated environments (e.g., fintech, insurtech, healthtech)
* Strong communication and people leadership skills
* Experience working in cross-functional product teams
* Fluent in German and English
