Nach technischen Zeichnungen bauen Werkzeugmechaniker*innen für jedes neue Kunststoff- oder Metallprodukt ein individuelles Spritzgieß-, Stanz- oder Biegewerkzeug. Die Bearbeitung der Einzelteile dieser Werkzeuge, die aus hochwertigem Stahl sind, erfolgt mit Bohr-, Dreh-, Fräs-, Schleif- und Funkenerosionsmaschinen, die teilweise CNC (numerisch) gesteuert sind. Die Wartung und das Instandsetzen von Werkzeugen ist ebenfalls Bestandteil.
