This position serves as adviser and provides technical assistance to lower grade machinists/tool maker and is responsible for the highly technical and specialized work such as CNC machine operation and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) programming, mastering techniques such as 2.5D milling, high-speed 3D free-form milling (HSS/HSM/HSR), constant volume cutting, and complex mill/turn combinations.
Prepares computer programs for a variety of numerically controlled/computer numerically controlled (NC/CNC) equipment such as lathes, milling machines, drills, grinders, machining centers, robots, flame cutters, etc. Studies fabrication sketches and analyzes engineering designs, layouts, blueprints, drawings, sketches, sample parts, etc., of parts or items to be fabricated or reclaimed. Through interpretation of engineering blueprints, drawings, shop orders, technical data, 3D parametric solid models, performs CNC operation. Uses specified surface finish and tolerances, characteristics of the material quantity to be manufactured, and other data to adjust and correct the CNC program. Utilizes the CAM Graphics System in order to display and debug programs for highly complex parts. Adjusts programs in a manner to drive Lean Principles throughout the process and improve safety, quality, and cycle time.
Performs shop floor programming associated with a level of programming difficulty that requires multiple axis contouring. Recommends adjustments, modifications, and development of software specifications to complement equipment specifications. Notes deficiencies or issues through knowledge of software, flow sequence, flow time inspection requirements and operations of CNC machine Determines feasibility of producing products on a particular NC/CNC or 3-D printing machine. Develops sequence of machining operation to produce the required fabrication item or reclamation item utilizing the computerized Interactive Graphics System, CAD/CAM. Converts drawing sketch, sample part, etc., into geometry that is acceptable to the computer to a valid 3D model for the use with CAM system to generate the required G-Code or a volume model. Determines step-by-step sequence of machine operations; choose reference points; selects proper cutting tools and correct speed and feed for each operation considering tolerance, type of metal, and surface finish required. Independently lays out reference points and lines to be followed in the machining processes, planning for and setting up the work in the machine, programming the cutter path, selecting and shaping metal cutting tools and inserts and operating all types of machine tools. Performs and controls the fabrication through computer-aided systems and manufacturing automation to produce the component. Performs changes to machining processes that require frequent computing and establish missing tolerances, dimensions, and types of fits and finishes. Makes estimates on man-hour requirements, cycle times, test run programs and coordinates any changes in control data with shop personnel, stores data in computer file for future use. Performs or instructs personnel in the performance of tape prove-out run on the machine to detect and correct errors in the permanent tape for production use. Conducts investigations to determine as-built quality, accuracy, and conditions associated with construction modifications and major production projects before entering the information into the respective machinery and Design Database. Updates the project drawings / database and annual updates. Supports initial requisitions for machine tools required for new CNC equipment.
Determines the post processing procedures after part is produced by additive or subtractive manufacturing, choose the appropriate technology to get the finally required metal structure and surface quality, these include selecting the correct parameters for post heat treatment.
As a subject matter expert for any welding, torching or soldering questions within the organization, is responsible to determine the correct welding process, welding wire material, required gas mixtures, pre- and post-processing of welding seems. Make sure that the weldment is within the specification of the pertaining welding code.
Creates drawings or 3D models in CAD and generate the tool path and strategy with CAM programs using the Master Model concept in 3D solids and processed through a Post Processor to generate a valid G-Code for the CNC machinery. The CNC program will consist of continuous tool/cutter path; tool changes; program stops; inserted notes that display to the machinist how to set up the workpiece and which tools need to be loaded into the automated tool changer. Through interpretation of engineering blueprints, drawings, shop orders, technical data, 3D parametric solid models, ascertains CNC operation intent. Uses specified surface finish and tolerances, characteristics of the material specified, quantity to be manufactured, and other data to develop the CNC program. Incumbent utilizes the Inventor CAM (computer aided manufacturing) Graphics System in order to develop, display, and debug programs for highly complex parts.
Is responsible for reverse engineering of parts where no blueprints are available, generate 3D models by the use of 3D scanning equipment, make sure that the surface of the scanning object meets the criteria for accurate 3D scanning, place the reference tags to the object and make sure they are all visible and reachable. Perform post processing of the 3D scanned model to gain enough accuracy for production by using special modeling and meshing software.
